Margaret Island

The island got its name from princess Margaret, daughter of Bela IV. who was sent on the island after her father successfully defeated the Tatars. Margaret had to stay on the island as a nun in the Dominican convent. You can still see the ruins of the convent.

The newly re-opened water tower next to the open air theatre is the oldest and highest water tower in the country, 101 years old and 66 metres high, built in Art Nouveau style. It can be visited to the third floor and from there you have beautiful view of Budapest. While you are walking up the stairs 35 projectors project three different exhibitions on the walls.  It is a UNESCO sight.

There is also a Japanese Garden on the island which is a series of lakes connected with channels. There are a lot of walking paths among the trees where you can walk or hike. It was created after the second World War but was only completed in 1958. The evergreens were donated by the Forest Institute but some seeds for Japanese plants were given by the Botanical Gardens of Hokkaido University. In 2000 Master gardener Sugimura Fuimo made some improvements in the Japanese garden and in 2002 even more Japanese plants were added.  The best time to visit is spring when the garden is full of blossoming trees but it is also very freshening in summer and autumn.
