Saint Stephen's Basilica

The basilica got its name after the first king of Hungary, Saint Stephen I. who converted Hungarians to Christian religion. When you enter the building and go to the high altar you can see his statue on it which is very uncommon. The basilica got a special Papal permission since King Stephen did so much for Christianity.

You can also see his mumificated right hand in the basilica which is a very important relic for religious people. It is called the ’Holy Right’.After the death of the king there was no rest in the country as it was not obvious who should be the next king. So the Chapter of Fehervar took his body out of his tomb and hid it in the catacomb under the basilica in Fehervar. At the same time the mumificated right hand was separated from the body and taken to the tresury as heavenly power was attributed to it. The chapel of the Holy Right can be found behind the sanctuary and you can see the relic in a reliquery.

Visitors can go up in the left tower from where there is breathtaking panorama of the city and the Buda hills. The largest bell of the country can also be found in St Stephen’s Basilica in the right tower. It weighs nine tons.
